The BlackbirdTour

"go further and beyond" ~ Laule

Hey there, I am Laule and here are a few words about the Skimont history and the way to the incredible Blackbird Tour.

Since we started building our own Skis in the Basement a lot has changed. From not knowing anything about shape and material or basically building skis to the BlackbirdTour 9 years went by. Years of set backs, broken skis, testing, experimental shapes and materials. But the dream of a perfect ski for my own riding style and preference didn't come as fast as planned. Since I started studying architecture in Innsbruck Austria in 2018, I've learned a lot about planning, material behaviour and design. I wrote my own NURBS based CAD program, which enabeled me to shape skis and snowboards within minutes and then test them in  computer simulations (CFD), that show stiffness, weight and potential weakspots.

The result? Well, this made it possible to design that reduces weight and vibrations, while maintaining stability and performance. In other words, a  ski, that allows to charge at high speeds, maneuver through tight tree runs and maintain control in all situations.

But the incentive was not only to create the ski of my dreams, I also wanted to keep everything regional and natural. The materials I use for my Skis, come from businesses in Germany, Austria and Swiss. We are trying hard to reduce and reuse as much as possible of our waste and make our Skis last. The Ski should be the same for everyone no matter hight, weight or skill. That for I developed something I call PPS (proportional performance sizing) meaning that each size grows proportionally in all dimensions to provide the same performance for big and heavy riders as for smaller and lighter riders.

One more thing about Skimont. I say Thank you to my dad Stefan, who  initially came up with the idea of making DIY Skis and also the brand name and he also designed most of the earlyer skis and is still doing it in the background. My Brother Pirmin who is doing all the Marketing stuff, my sister Janika who helps with her professional photographer skills where she can and my mom who always supported our ski building business despite the noise and dirt we caused in the 8 sqm basement.
